Have you ever gone to the bookstore looking for children’s picture books with a sports twist? You’d find plenty of choices about football, baseball, basketball and even gymnastics. Finding a book about bowling might’ve been challenging, until now.
Author Hallie Durand’s newest book “Mitchell Goes Bowling” is about the same high-energy boy from her first picture book titled “Mitchell’s License.” The paperback version was re-titled “Mitchell Goes Driving” but it is the same story of a child who gets to drive his father to bed.
In this bowling-themed book, we find Mitchell almost knocking down his father, who then puts him in the car and heads to the bowling center.
“Mitchell feels right at home. Pizza! Giant crashing noises! Special shoes!” But Mitchell finds himself frustrated with some gutter balls, while his dad makes it look easy with a little leg kick and BAM! He gets a strike. Never fear though, Mitchell finds his groove.” *Quote from book
“And Mitchell’s not the only one who likes to knock things down. There are sixty million bowlers in America of all shapes and sizes—I sure hope Mitchell Goes Bowling inspires bowlers everywhere to bust a move . . . Battle on!” *Quote from Hallie Durand’s blog
The IAB asked Hallie what she feels is the most special about bowling. “First of all, everybody gets to wear really cool colorful shoes. Then, there’s all that room around the individual lane, with lots of seats. The kids can move around without bothering anybody. There’s the fact that the bowling center is one of the few places where you can really throw something, hard, and get points for it! And you get to see your name on the scoreboard, and eat snacks. And after all that, sometimes there’s an arcade where you can play a game of pinball or two. Last, it’s a terrific rainy day activity that everybody can enjoy. I love bowling.”
About the author
Hallie Durand and her family reside in Maplewood, NJ, where they enjoy frequent trips to their local lanes. While Durand does not classify her family as serious bowlers, they enjoy spending rainy (and sunny) days knocking down the pins. Durand had a passion for writing this book because of their love of the lanes, even though she said she stinks at the game.
